Run The London Underground - Rhino's

Run The London Underground

Duncan Deane and Jonathan Kershaw are two South Africans running the London Underground, from station to station, above ground, line by line. The idea is to raise awareness and money to save the Rhino's and to get fit and see London. Member of the public can join in on the run. Keep an eye on where they boys are and where they going?

"Every 12 hours a Rhino is killed in South Africa. A simple and devastating fact, but true nonetheless. The thought that when you wake up tomorrow morning another Rhino would have been slaughtered is heartbreaking, yet there is something you can do in the next 12 hours to help change this."

Run the London Underground has partnered with 12 Hours a Rhino charity in South Africa. They will be dedicating each run, each station, each kilometer and each drop of sweat to the plight of one of Africa's most majestic animals, the Rhino.

Each of the 5 species of Rhino are either endangered or close to being extinct due to poaching, habitat loss, or political conflict. Poaching has risen drastically in Africa. This is mainly due to the value of rhino horn in Asian countries such as China and Vietnam where it is used for traditional medicines, sexual stimulants, hangover cures and many other uses.

More than 1300 Rhinos were poached in 2015.

To put that in perspective, that is up from 1215 in 2014. In fact, the number has steadily increased year-on-year since 2008. This is even more scary when you look at the current Black (approx. 5000)- and White (approx 20 000) Rhino population.

The rate at which rhinos are being slaughtered have reached crisis point and if we do not all join the war against poaching, there will soon be no rhinos left in the wild.
